Summary: The hotel is average at best. It is definitely not 4* as advertised. Maybe once back in the 90s. You are made to wear a wristband even if on a B&B package, not something I’ve seen in a 4* before. It lacks any personality or ambiance and has an eery atmosphere. The decor is sterile. In fact, it is 3 hotels merged into one and each are decorated differently with the Royal Orchid meant to be the better part. It is not. The terraces are cold and uninviting, some are oddly huge without much furniture. Rooms are depressingly boring. The hotel bar is not a place you’d want to spend time in, the evening entertainment is naff. There is a much better 4*hotel and bar round the corner that’s worth a visit - Sentido Galomar. The breakfast is whatever you can make of it and feels worse than a hectic school canteen. One redeeming feature is the gym, though the staff aren’t the friendliest. Check in took forever, so much paperwork and not much information given about certain things around the hotel, we had to figure things out for ourselves. The location is fine, easily accessible to the rest of Madeira and walkable to a beach. We did end up spending more than planned as didn’t want to spend any longer than we had to in the hotel or our room.
