Welcome to Yr Hen Llythyrdy (The Old Post Office), a spacious yet cosy 3-bed cottage in the heart of the Preseli hills in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Walk or cycle straight from the door onto the beautiful hills or visit any of Pembrokeshire’s stunning beaches, all in less than an hours drive.
Sleeps six - 2 king size beds and a bunk bed. Travel cot also available.
One well-behaved dog is allowed for an additional fee of £25 per booking.
The Accommodation:
Yr Hen Llythyrdy was originally the village’s one room Post Office but was extended and converted many years ago. It has wooden floors throughout and is tastefully furnished with dark wood furniture.
It has a private off-road parking for 2 cars and a large private rear garden which is fully fenced and has views to the Preselis. We are happy to welcome one well-behaved dog per booking for a small additional fee.
The cottage sleeps six in three bedrooms - two bedrooms have king-size beds and there is a bunk bed in the third bedroom. All linen, apart from beach towels, is supplied and the beds will be made up ready for your arrival.
The kitchen has a large butler sink and is equipped with a Bosch dishwasher, a Liebherr fridge freezer, an Indesit washing machine and separate Indesit dryer. It also has a large larder cupboard and an LG Wavedom microwave and oven.
The dining room has a large wooden farmhouse table which seats six and a Sandyford Classic (Aga-style) cooker. Please note that this is the only cooker in the house. It is easy to use but does work differently to a standard electric cooker and takes a little longer. Full details of how to use it are in the Property Information Pack. If you would prefer not to use the Sandyford, the Wavedom in the kitchen will cook most things.
The large sitting room has a Bush smart TV and a Harman Kardon Sound Sticks speaker system.
The rear sun room is a great place to relax with a book while looking out across the garden to the hills. When the sun shines this is a real sun trap. French doors from the sunroom open directly onto the garden where you will find a large picnic table and chairs, and a barrel BBQ.
The downstairs shower room has a large luxurious walk-in rainfall shower, a loo and a basin.
Upstairs all the beds come with cosy 10.5tog duck feather duvets, sumptuous 400 thread count Egyptian cotton linen, luxuriously comfy mattress toppers, and traditional Welsh blankets for those chilly nights. The bunk beds in the third bedroom can be used for adults and children alike and we also have a travel cot, with a separate mattress, and a high chair available for our younger guests.
The upstairs bathroom has a full-size bath, with a rainfall shower over, a loo and a basin.
The Location:
The village of Mynachlogddu, meaning “black monastic grange” and pronounced “Mun-ach-log-thee”, is nestled right in amongst the Preseli Hills within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
The village has a lovely wooden playground, just around the corner from Yr Hen Llythyrdy, and a small rustic football pitch. Just outside the village is Preseli Pony Trekking which offers riding through the magnificent Preseli Hills and there is also a pottery in the village where you can try your hand at making your very own pot!
The Preselis are dotted with prehistoric remains, including evidence of Neolithic settlement, and are believed to have been one of the sources of the bluestones used in the inner circle of Stonehenge. The hills have Special Area of Conservation status and the citation states that the area is “exceptional in Wales for the combination of upland and lowland features...” with a wide variety of bird, insect and plant life.
Just a short walk from Yr Hen Llythyrdy is the beautiful and ancient Gors Fawr stone circle which dates from the early Bronze Age and consists of 16 small stones whose heights rise towards the south. Nearby are a pair of standing stones – both nearly two metres tall and set 14 metres apart – which some suggest were positioned to be aligned with the midsummer sunrise. One is known locally as the Dreaming Stone.
From Yr Hen Llythyrdy you can walk directly onto the Preseli Hills which stretch some 13 miles (20km) from Newport in the west to Crymych in the east. The ancient 8 mile (13km) track along the top of the range is known as the Golden Road. The principal peak is Foel Cwmcerwyn which stands at 1,759ft (536m) above sea level and there are 14 other peaks over 980ft (300m) of which three exceed 1,300ft (400m).
Walks vary from easy to long-distance and there are also a number of bridleways and cycle paths throughout the hills and local area. Mynachlogddu is on National Cycle Route 47 which runs 128 miles from Newport to Fishguard, and the village is also a great base for anyone wanting to tackle the 186 mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path which runs from Poppit Sands in the north right around to Amroth in the south.
Or, if it’s the beach life you’re looking for, Yr Hen Llythyrdy is less than an hour’s drive from all of Pembrokeshire’s beautiful, unspoilt and uncrowded beaches. The idyllic former fishing village of Newport, home to the magnificent 1.5 mile long Newport Sands beach, is the closest at just 13 miles (20 minutes drive) away.
Alternatively, head north to Poppit Sands near St Dogmaels, with views across to Cardigan Island, or the ancient cove of Mwnt, with its sheltered beach and historic church. Heading south will take you to Saundersfoot and Tenby, and if you go west you will find the beaches at Newgale, Nolton Haven, Broad Haven and Little Haven as well as many other little coves and beaches.
And the cottage is just 20 minutes drive from the Bluestone National Park Resort which is open to non-residents. Set in more than 500 acres, Bluestone offers many indoor and outdoor activities as well as the Blue Lagoon waterpark and an award-winning spa.
Local services:
Mynachlogddu is just five miles from the village of Maenclochog, home to Sarah’s Newsagents, which is open seven days a week and stocks everything from wheelbarrows to Weetabix, as well as popular café Caffi’r Sgwar, a pub, and two petrol stations.
Just three miles down the road in the other direction is Crymych which has a large Spar shop, a butcher’s shop, a couple of pubs, a petrol station, a leisure centre with swimming pool, and various fast food outlets including a Chinese takeaway, a fish and chip shop, and a kebab shop.
The small village of Glandy Cross is just 2.5 miles away and has a petrol station with a handy Spar shop. The market town of Narberth is 10 miles to the south, and Cardigan, which has a large Tesco supermarket and many other high street shops, is 10 miles north. Tesco will deliver to Yr Hen Llythyrdy.
The nearby village of Rosebush is home to Tafarn Sinc, a historic red tin pub which has been serving locals and tourists for more than 140 years and is great for a pint or a hearty lunch or supper. It is now owned and run by the local community and has retained its character with flitches of real ham hanging from the ceiling and sawdust on the floor.
And just 10 minutes drive away is the award-winning Siop Carla, a fantastic farm shop which sells fresh local produce straight from the family farm.
There are limited bus services to the village so we recommend that guests have a car for their holiday. Yr Hen Llythyrdy has private off-road parking for 2 cars. The nearest station is Clunderwen, around 7 miles away, which has connections to Swansea where you can connect to many major main line services. Local taxis are also available.
