Arrival at this residence in the high desert comes upon the visitor suddenly. Surrounded by juniper, bitterbrush and sage, the house is designed no higher than the vegetation encircling it. Board form concrete walls - colored to match the land - present a camouflaged, solid face to the desert entry. The east face, in contrast, features floor-to-ceiling glass and opens to the rim of a massive basalt canyon and distant mountain views.
Three living areas inhabit the concrete spine. The living room, dining room, kitchen and laundry comprise the center section. Down long hallways in either direction are the master bedroom and bath and a guest room, guest bath and gym/office. Two bluestone terraces offer canyon views and infinite opportunities for lounging, dining and entertaining.
Located ten miles northeast of Sisters, Oregon, this stunning, custom-built retreat is dramatically sited on 41 acres of classic High Desert topography. Perched at the edge of a 1400’ cliff, the property overlooks and offers private access to Whychus Canyon Preserve, one of the most important river conservation projects in North America and home to steelhead, salmon, deer, elk, cougar, eagles, hawks, coyote and countless smaller birds and wildlife.
In addition to the dramatic, unobstructed, eternally protected 180 degree plus views of the Wychus Canyon Preserve, there are also intimate and distant views to Broken Top, the Three Sisters, Smith Rock State Park, the Ochoco Mountains, Gray Peak and Mount Jefferson.
On the property itself, discreet footpaths lead to a series of breathtaking mini-destinations, including a giant teak "King"chair carved from a canoe overlooking the north-east canyon view, and a second path leading to a canvas, safari-style "glamping" tent, complete with wooden platform and small deck, and outfitted inside with wrought-iron queen bed, killim rug and teak furnishings. Rounding out the property's exterior features are an outdoor spa and lush, grassy lounge/game area.
