We call Potrero “one of Costa Rica’s best-kept little secrets” because it occupies a Goldilocks zone between too big, too small, too crowded and too remote. It’s actually a great find on Guanacaste’s Gold Coast, between Las Catalinas and Flamingo, with easy access to Brasilito, Playa Grande and points beyond. Potrero is an authentically Tico town, with the downtown soccer field, church and school, but it’s also a magnet to both tourists and expats. Its southern neighbor, Surfside, has a lively one-street downtown lined with restaurants, bars, tour agencies and a great grocery store.
Potrero is about 50 minutes from the international airport in Liberia. Rent a car and you’ll be within a day’s drive of dozens of beaches and five or six national parks.

The Neighborhood:
Offering easy access to three beaches (Potrero, Penca and Prieta), this town combines upscale lodging options with the charm of a traditional Costa Rican town (think central plaza with church, school and soccer field).
There are plenty of restaurants, shops and other conveniences, and the downtown area has two mini supers (convenience stores), as well as a commercial plaza with a coffee shop, a hairdresser and other businesses.
Some of the liveliest nightlife in the region can be found at Las Brisas Bar, right on the beach, though it’s normally hopping only on Wednesdays (Ladies’ Night).
Potrero has several nice housing developments with “Villagio” in the name, popular among Italians and other expats. You can find Italian gelato shops, Costa Rican sodas (small, affordable restaurants) and hotels in a range of prices (Pitaya Lodge, Bahía La Esmeralda, Hotel Isolina, Bahía del Sol).
Just to the south of Potrero lie all the attractions of Surfside, and to the north is a beautiful, hilly drive along the ocean, ending at the Mediterranean-style village of Las Catalinas. Potrero is within easy striking distance of several beaches, and it’s a great base to explore the entire region — for a sampler of both the high-end and the humble.
Getting Around:
Our agents will be happy to assist you with renting a car, giving you the freedom to explore the area where you want, when you want. For short drives to nearby towns or beaches, golf carts are another popular mode of transportation. You can also rent a bicycle to ride around in town or beyond.

Taxis are available but can be a bit hard to find. Many locals use buses to get around, though there are a limited number of routes and times of day when you can catch them. Private shuttles can be a great option for traveling to nearby destinations, and many tour companies offer transportation to and from the tour.
